The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has welcomed the publication of Senator Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as a major step toward the 2027 general election.
The party said the inclusion of Onor and his running mate, Babangida Umar, on INEC’s published list has ended months of uncertainty over whether the faction would successfully field candidates for the presidential election.
According to the faction’s leadership, the development validates its preparations for the 2027 polls and disproves claims that internal disputes would prevent it from participating in the election. It also maintained that the publication strengthens its position ahead of the campaign season.
The faction further argued that INEC’s action deals a setback to the rival PDP group, which had earlier announced former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate amid an ongoing leadership dispute within the party.
