Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Thursday unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft belonging to United Nigeria Airlines, named in honour of renowned author Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe. The ceremony was held at Nesto Aviation Services, Ikeja, Lagos.
Speaking at the event, Otti commended the airline’s Chairman and Founder, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, for celebrating distinguished Nigerians through the naming of the aircraft, describing the gesture as a recognition of excellence and national service.
The governor also praised ongoing reforms in the aviation sector and efforts to encourage private-sector participation, noting that such initiatives would strengthen the capacity of indigenous airlines and improve air transportation in the country.
Otti further expressed appreciation for support toward the Abia Airport project, revealing that construction work on the runway had reached an advanced stage. He reiterated the state’s readiness to partner with airlines and investors to boost aviation development.
Explaining the choice of names, Okonkwo said one aircraft was dedicated to the late Chinua Achebe in recognition of his global literary impact, while the second was named after Igwe Alfred Achebe for his leadership, achievements and contributions to national development.
