Obasanjo Denies Deceiving AD Leaders During 2003 Political

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has rejected claims by former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, that he deceived leaders of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD) during the political realignments leading to the 2003 general elections.

Obasanjo, in a letter dated July 23, 2026, described Osoba’s account as inaccurate and maintained that he never misled Yoruba political leaders or acted in bad faith during the events preceding the 2003 elections.

The former President took exception to Osoba’s allegation that he deceived AD leaders, insisting that his political engagements had always been guided by openness, honesty and the national interest.

Obasanjo also argued that Osoba’s account contained several inaccuracies, omissions and misconceptions, adding that many of the high-level political discussions before and after his release from prison were handled by senior figures within Afenifere and the Alliance for Democracy.

The exchange follows Osoba’s recent article in which he accused the former President of deceiving AD leaders during negotiations that preceded the 2003 elections. Obasanjo, however, maintained that he had always presented issues as he understood them and never set out to deceive anyone.
