The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate demolition of a dilapidated two-storey building in the Oke-Suna area of Ilorin East Local Government Area after declaring the structure unsafe and a potential threat to lives and property.
The directive was issued through the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), which also sealed off the building following complaints from residents who feared it could collapse at any time. The agency said its action followed an inspection prompted by reports from members of the community.
During the inspection, residents reportedly told officials that they had repeatedly warned the property’s owner about the deteriorating condition of the building, but no remedial action was taken despite visible signs of structural failure.
Reacting to the findings, KWEPA General Manager Jide Aina described the building as a serious public safety risk and directed the owner to begin immediate demolition.
He warned that if the owner failed to comply with the order, the state government would carry out the demolition to prevent a possible tragedy and safeguard nearby residents.
Aina reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental safety regulations and urged residents to promptly report distressed buildings, abandoned structures and other environmental hazards to the agency for swift intervention.
