A coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians under the banner of the G-100 has urged opposition political leaders to put aside personal ambitions and unite behind a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, arguing that a divided opposition would strengthen the ruling party’s chances of retaining power.
In an open letter titled “The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition,” the group appealed to key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and other political leaders, to begin negotiations aimed at presenting one consensus presidential candidate.
The coalition said a united front is essential to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and provide voters with a credible alternative in the 2027 presidential election. It warned that continued fragmentation among opposition parties could pave the way for another easy victory for the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The G-100 also urged opposition leaders to place national interest above personal political aspirations, stressing that cooperation and consensus would improve their chances of mounting a formidable challenge in the next general election.
