A pro-Peoples Democratic Party group in Akwa Ibom State has rejected claims that the party’s structure in the state is collapsing or being taken over by the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice, described reports suggesting that prominent PDP members and supporters were abandoning the party for the APC as misleading.
The group maintained that the PDP remains a strong political force in Akwa Ibom and dismissed the reported defections as attempts to create the impression that the party has lost its political relevance in the state.
The development comes amid increasing political realignments across the country ahead of the 2027 elections, with both the PDP and APC seeking to strengthen their structures and attract influential political figures.
The group said the PDP’s continued political activities in Akwa Ibom demonstrated that its structure remained intact, urging party members and supporters not to be distracted by what it described as politically motivated narratives.
It also called on the public to scrutinise claims about mass defections and political realignments, particularly as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
The group’s position follows reports suggesting that the APC is making inroads into the PDP’s political base in Akwa Ibom, a state that has traditionally been regarded as a stronghold of the opposition party.
The PDP supporters insisted that the party would remain active in the state and continue mobilising ahead of the next general elections.
