Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged northern political leaders seeking the presidency to defer their ambitions until 2031, arguing that the current rotation of power between the North and South should be maintained.
Yusuf made the call on Sunday at the Kano State Government House while unveiling 50 vehicles donated by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for campaign mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor said Nigeria should allow the South to complete what he described as its two-term presidential cycle before power returns to the North.
“I urge support for President Bola Tinubu to complete his second term because this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North,” Yusuf said.
He added that northern politicians should exercise patience, stressing that “after that, power will return to the North in 2031.”
Yusuf said his position was based on the principle of rotational presidency, which he argued could promote fairness, equity, national cohesion and a sense of belonging among the different regions of the country.
The governor’s comments come as political activities and alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians and political groups positioning themselves for the presidential contest.
Yusuf also appealed to political parties and their candidates to make the 2027 campaigns issue-based, urging them to concentrate on policies and development programmes rather than personal attacks.
“Let us focus on issues, policies and programmes and avoid actions that can undermine peace and unity,” he said.
The governor further called on political actors to prioritise the unity and development of Kano State and Nigeria as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
