The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has warned political actors against taking domestic political battles abroad in ways that could damage Nigeria’s reputation and affect citizens seeking opportunities overseas.
Agbese said opposition politicians were free to criticise the Federal Government and challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration but should avoid actions that could negatively portray Nigeria before foreign governments and international institutions.
He argued that portraying the country negatively could have consequences for Nigerian students, entrepreneurs, professionals and other citizens living or seeking opportunities abroad.
According to the lawmaker, political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections should not come at the expense of Nigeria’s international reputation.
“You cannot destroy the country’s reputation today and expect ordinary Nigerians to escape the consequences tomorrow,” Agbese said.
He also urged political leaders to pursue their disagreements through democratic and judicial institutions while prioritising Nigeria’s national interest.
