Opposition politicians and political stakeholders are set to converge in Abuja as part of efforts to build a stronger alliance capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election.
The summit, scheduled for Monday, is expected to focus on how opposition parties can overcome their differences, develop a common political strategy and present a stronger challenge to the APC.
The meeting comes amid growing calls for opposition leaders to put aside personal ambitions and work towards a united platform ahead of the election.
A coalition of prominent Nigerians had earlier urged major opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi and other political leaders, to negotiate the emergence of a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The group argued that the opposition’s fragmentation could strengthen the APC’s chances of retaining power, stressing that a coordinated political structure would be necessary to mount a credible challenge.
The summit is therefore expected to examine possible areas of cooperation among opposition parties, including candidate selection, campaign strategy and how to mobilise voters across the country.
The push for opposition unity has intensified as different political parties continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 polls, with some stakeholders already advocating for particular candidates.
While the African Democratic Congress has emerged as one of the major platforms attracting opposition figures, other political interests remain active in negotiations over the direction of the opposition movement.
