The campaign organisation of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called on the Nigeria Police Force to prosecute Senator Francis Fadahunsi over alleged comments that were interpreted as incitement to violence against members of the Accord Party.
The campaign spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, urged the police to take decisive action against the Osun East Senator, saying the alleged remarks should not be treated as ordinary political rhetoric.
The controversy followed a viral video in which Fadahunsi was allegedly heard making comments about killing members of the Accord Party and their families during an All Progressives Congress campaign event in Ilesa.
The allegation has attracted condemnation from political parties and human rights organisations, with Amnesty International and the National Human Rights Commission also calling for accountability.
Fadahunsi has denied inciting violence, maintaining that his comments were political and metaphorical and were not intended to encourage attacks on Accord members.
The senator was subsequently questioned by the Osun State Police Command for more than two hours over the controversial remarks. He was accompanied by his lawyer and APC associates during the interrogation.
Olajengbesi maintained that the police should thoroughly investigate the matter and prosecute the senator if found to have violated the law.
The demand comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding the Osun governorship election and renewed concerns over violence, intimidation and inflammatory statements during election campaigns.
The APC has also said it was against political violence and maintained that the police should determine whether Fadahunsi’s comments amounted to a criminal offence.
