The African Democratic Congress has raised concerns over an alleged move by security agencies to arrest its National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
The party said it had received what it described as “credible reports” of plans to arrest the former Osun State governor in the days leading to the election. Punch Newspaper reports that the ADC warned that such a development could disrupt its campaign and election-day activities.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of intimidation and harassment of opposition figures.
The ADC said Aregbesola’s role as a key party official made any attempt to restrict his movement or detain him particularly sensitive, especially with the governorship poll only days away.
The party called on the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that the election environment remained free from actions that could undermine opposition participation.
Aregbesola, who served as governor of Osun State from 2010 to 2018 and later became Minister of Interior, is currently the National Secretary of the ADC.
The party urged security agencies to operate within the law and avoid actions that could create tension or raise questions about the credibility of the election.
The allegation comes as political parties intensify their final preparations for the Osun governorship election, with major contenders seeking to mobilise supporters across the state.
The ADC maintained that it would continue with its political activities despite the reported threat, while urging its members and supporters to remain calm and focused on the election.
