Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has accused federal institutions, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), of being used to target opposition-controlled states and influence political outcomes.
Makinde, in a statement, criticised what he described as the increasing use of federal institutions to disrupt governance in opposition states, arguing that selective investigations could erode public confidence in the country’s institutions.
The governor questioned the freezing of an official state government account by the EFCC, arguing that such an action without due legal process exceeds the commission’s powers under Nigerian law.
He also questioned the timing of the action, suggesting that it could be an attempt by the federal government to influence the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
According to Makinde, no government institution should be above scrutiny, but investigations by agencies such as the EFCC must be conducted fairly and without political considerations.
He called on federal institutions to remain faithful to their constitutional mandates by operating with fairness, professionalism and political neutrality.
Makinde also urged Nigerians, civil society organisations and the international community to remain vigilant, warning that democracy could be weakened when public institutions are perceived as instruments of political intimidation.
He stressed the importance of protecting the independence and credibility of government institutions, saying, “The rule of law must prevail over the rule of politics.”
