The Lagos State Government has stepped into the case of a 28-year-old widow who alleged that she and her two children were subjected to threats, intimidation and physical assault by members of her late husband’s family following his death.
The widow, identified as Tosin, claimed the ordeal began shortly after her husband died on July 20, prompting calls for government intervention to protect her and her children.
The case gained public attention after activist Harrison Gwamnishu shared videos and posts on social media alleging that the woman’s in-laws had attempted to force her out of her home in Ikorodu, Lagos.
Gwamnishu alleged that the deceased’s family moved into the residence days after his death and ordered the widow to move her belongings and those of her two young sons into a single room. He also claimed that some of the deceased’s personal belongings had been shared among family members, while plans were underway to sell his vehicle.
Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) said it immediately established contact with the widow after the matter went viral.
The agency disclosed that the woman reported receiving threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation after the death of her husband. It added that the case had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division before its intervention.
According to the DSVA, it has commenced engagement with the investigating police officers handling the matter.
The agency said preliminary information from the police indicated that the alleged perpetrator had been arrested and was in custody while investigations continue.
It assured the public that the Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring the safety of the widow and her children and will continue working with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served in accordance with the law.
