Former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has reiterated his belief that he won the 2007 Lagos State governorship election, despite the official declaration of former governor Babatunde Fashola as the winner. He, however, said he has put his governorship ambition behind him.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Mic On podcast, Obanikoro said many of his supporters have long maintained that he was the rightful winner of the election, adding that he shares the same conviction.
“I also believe that we won that election, but you know Nigeria, it is what it is,” he said.
The former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate contested the 2007 election after defecting from the Alliance for Democracy (AD), but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Fashola of the then Action Congress (AC) the winner.
Despite his stance on the outcome of the election, Obanikoro said he has no intention of seeking the Lagos governorship again, noting that his political focus has shifted away from the office.
His comments come amid renewed discussions about Lagos politics and Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
