A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a man, Justice Odey, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of murdering 35-year-old Benedict Agara during a violent altercation over a woman identified as Amina.
Justice Oyindamola Ogala delivered the judgment after holding that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found Odey guilty of murder and imposed the death sentence prescribed under Lagos State law.
According to court proceedings, the incident stemmed from a disagreement involving a woman, which later escalated into a physical confrontation. During the fight, Odey fatally attacked Agara, leading to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented witnesses and evidence linking the defendant to the killing. The court ruled that the evidence established his guilt beyond reasonable doubt, warranting the maximum punishment for the offence.
The judgment brings an end to the criminal trial, with the court reaffirming that acts of violence resulting in loss of life will attract severe legal consequences.
