What began as a disagreement over family property reportedly turned fatal in Rivers State, where a man is accused of killing his father, retired Marine Captain David Nwoke.
The incident occurred on Sunday at Oro Ekpo Estate in the Ada George area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, throwing residents into shock and mourning. The Rivers State Police Command confirmed on Thursday that the suspect had been arrested and was assisting investigators.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the deceased had recently concluded plans to relocate to his hometown in the South-East and had invited his children to inform them about sharing parts of his property before leaving.
However, trouble allegedly started when one of his sons, said to be from his second wife, demanded ownership of one of the retired officer’s vehicles. The request was reportedly declined after the father insisted he had already made adequate provisions for all his children.
The source alleged that the suspect hid inside the family home while waiting for his father to return from his routine morning exercise. Moments after the retired Marine Captain entered his room to freshen up, he was allegedly attacked with a machete.
The victim reportedly sustained fatal injuries before help could arrive.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Blessing Agabe, said the suspect was in custody while detectives continued investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
