A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has distanced itself from the 2027 presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting that he is neither the party’s candidate nor authorised to present himself as such.
The faction, led by its National Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, said the party had already concluded its internal nomination process and adopted Professor Chris Uba as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. It maintained that all constitutional and electoral procedures were followed in arriving at the decision.
In a statement, Gombe also rejected the David Mark-led National Working Committee, describing it as an unauthorised body with no constitutional or legal authority to act on behalf of the party. He insisted that the ADC had not entered into any merger, coalition or alliance with any other political party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The faction warned Atiku to stop portraying himself as the ADC’s presidential candidate, stressing that the party would take all necessary legal and constitutional steps to protect its identity and officially nominated candidates from what it described as misrepresentation.
Gombe reaffirmed the faction’s confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the country’s electoral process, dismissing claims that there were attempts to stop the ADC from participating in the 2027 general elections. He urged party members and the public to disregard reports linking the party to any unauthorised coalition or presidential aspiration outside its officially recognised structures.
