The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed doubts about the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) chances of winning the 2027 presidential election, saying the party must first address its internal challenges before thinking about returning to power.
Speaking during a media chat on Thursday, Wike noted that the PDP is still grappling with internal divisions and lacks the level of organization required to mount a successful presidential campaign across the country. He stressed that rebuilding the party from the grassroots should be the immediate priority.
According to him, expecting electoral victory without first resolving leadership disputes and strengthening party structures in the states would be unrealistic. He added that winning a presidential election requires years of preparation, extensive nationwide coordination, and a strong political presence in all 36 states.
Wike also dismissed claims that Nigeria’s democracy revolves around the participation of a few opposition figures, insisting that democratic competition extends beyond individual politicians.
The former Rivers State governor further recalled being accused of working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), maintaining that his position has always been that the PDP must put its internal affairs in order if it hopes to become competitive again.
He concluded that while the PDP remains a major political party, restoring unity, rebuilding its structures, and reconnecting with voters will be essential if it intends to challenge effectively in the 2027 general election.
