Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are among opposition figures expected to participate in a summit aimed at building a stronger political alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.
The summit, scheduled for August 18, 2026, in Abuja, is being facilitated by the G100 coalition of concerned Nigerians as part of efforts to bring opposition parties together. Vanguard reported that the group has already held consultations with leaders of several opposition parties.
According to the coalition, the consultations involved leaders of six opposition political parties, including the African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress and Allied Peoples Movement, as well as the Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.
The group said its discussions had shown a growing recognition among opposition leaders that greater cooperation would be necessary to build an effective challenge ahead of the 2027 elections.
The August 18 summit is expected to provide a platform for the parties to discuss possible areas of cooperation and the modalities for achieving greater opposition unity.
The G100 said the process would require political leaders to make compromises and place national interests above individual and partisan ambitions.
The planned meeting comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of 2027, with opposition figures exploring possible alliances that could challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The coalition said it deliberately kept its initial consultations away from the media to allow political leaders to engage freely on sensitive issues without pressure from public commentary.
