Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country’s electoral process, insisting that the outcome of the 2023 general elections should not discourage citizens from participating in future polls.
Obi made the appeal on Wednesday while visiting Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) centres at Nise and Nri civic centres in Anambra State, where he encouraged eligible Nigerians to register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former Anambra State governor acknowledged that many Nigerians believe their votes did not count during the last general election but maintained that abandoning the electoral process would not bring about the desired change.
He said voting remains the most effective democratic tool for electing leaders who can improve education, healthcare, employment and the overall welfare of the people.
“I urge all Nigerians who are of voting age and have not registered to go out and register to vote in the coming election. We cannot give up because it did not work yesterday. We only work for a better future by doing the right thing. I assure you that your votes will count this time around,” Obi said.
The NDC presidential candidate also expressed confidence in the judiciary over his party’s appeal against the recent Lokoja court judgment, saying he believes the courts will deliver justice.
Obi stressed that his focus remains on encouraging greater citizens’ participation in the democratic process, urging Nigerians to fulfil their civic responsibility by registering and voting in future elections.
