The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Governor Douye Diri to make the fight against hunger, poverty and worsening economic hardship a top priority in the second half of 2026.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Ikaebimo Mark, the PDP said many residents were struggling with the rising cost of living despite increased revenue accruing to the state through higher derivation receipts and federal allocations. The party urged the government to implement policies that would create jobs, support small and medium-scale enterprises, empower youths and women, and stimulate economic growth.
The opposition also expressed concern that several Memoranda of Understanding signed by the state government had yet to attract investments capable of boosting industrialisation and employment. It urged the Diri administration to focus on wealth creation and people-centred programmes to improve living standards.
Responding, the Bayelsa State Government dismissed the allegations, insisting that Governor Diri’s administration had made significant investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and youth empowerment to cushion the effects of the country’s economic challenges. The government maintained that its programmes were already improving the welfare of residents across the state.
