Kano 2027: Kwankwassiyya to Pursue INEC Over Omission of NDC Candidate

The Kwankwassiyya Movement has said it will engage the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and explore legal options to secure the inclusion of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, and his running mate, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, on the final list for the 2027 election.

The movement expressed confidence that the omission would be resolved, insisting that the candidates had fulfilled the requirements to participate in the governorship election.

The spokesperson for the movement, Habibu Mohammed, disclosed this on Sunday while appearing on an Arise Television programme.

Mohammed said the omission came as a surprise because, according to him, there had been no prior dispute with INEC or pending court judgment that would explain the exclusion of the candidates.

He maintained that Gwarzo was duly registered as an NDC member within the stipulated period and had met the necessary requirements to contest the election.

The movement said it would take advantage of the 14-day statutory window available for seeking redress over the omission of candidates from the final list.

Mohammed added that the group would formally engage the electoral commission to establish the circumstances surrounding the development and seek a resolution.

He said the movement remained optimistic that the matter would be addressed, noting that it was prepared to pursue available options in accordance with the law.

INEC’s final list of governorship candidates for Kano State, released on Saturday, contained 17 candidates and their running mates but excluded Gwarzo and Kwankwaso.

The omission has generated reactions from the NDC and its supporters, who have called for clarification from the electoral commission.

The NDC’s Kano State chapter had earlier urged members to remain calm, saying it had contacted INEC and was informed that the issue might have resulted from a technical error.

However, INEC had not publicly provided a specific explanation for the omission as of the time of the report.
