The United Kingdom and Canada have agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence and artificial intelligence following talks between their Prime Ministers.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, in the UK on Wednesday, with discussions centred on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation with European partners.
According to the British government, the leaders emphasised the importance of closer ties in trade and defence as both countries seek to deepen their existing partnership.
On defence, Starmer welcomed Canada’s recent decision to become the first observer nation in the Global Combat Air Programme, a multinational initiative focused on developing next-generation combat aircraft.
The two leaders also discussed further defence cooperation, including the work of the Multilateral Defence Mechanism and the Defence Security Resilience Bank.
Artificial intelligence was another major issue discussed during the meeting, with Starmer and Carney examining both the opportunities and challenges associated with the rapidly developing technology.
The leaders agreed that governments and technology companies should work together to address concerns surrounding AI and strengthen online safety.
The meeting took place before the two leaders attended Everton’s Carabao Cup match against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Liverpool.
The British government said Starmer and Carney looked forward to maintaining further contact as the two countries continue to strengthen cooperation across several sectors.
