The Lagos State Government has issued a formal query to an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) after a viral video allegedly showed him collecting a ₦20,000 bribe from a suspected environmental offender.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced on Friday that the officer’s alleged actions violated the ethics and core values of the agency. He said the officer has been served a query and that a Personnel Management Board will be constituted to investigate the incident in line with the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
According to Wahab, the Lagos State Government maintains a zero-tolerance policy on corruption and warned that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures as provided by law.
He also cautioned members of the public against offering bribes to government officials, stressing that both giving and receiving bribes are criminal offences. He urged Lagos residents to comply with the law and help promote integrity and accountability in public service.
The query letter, dated July 10, 2026, accused the officer of collecting ₦20,000 from an offender, an act allegedly captured on video and circulated on social media. The letter stated that the footage was viewed by the Lagos State Governor and described the alleged conduct as corruption and extortion, amounting to serious misconduct under the Public Service Rules. The officer has been directed to submit a written explanation within 48 hours or face disciplinary action.
