The Adamawa State Government has declared Monday a work-free day in honour of former Governor of the defunct Gongola State and ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bamanga Tukur.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri announced the decision following Tukur’s burial in Yola on Sunday after funeral prayers at the Lamido’s Palace.
The governor said the declaration would allow residents to pay their final respects to the late elder statesman and reflect on his contributions to Adamawa State and Nigeria.
Fintiri described Tukur as a prominent statesman whose contributions to the development of the state and the country would remain memorable.
He urged residents to use the work-free day to pray for the repose of Tukur’s soul and seek comfort for his family, friends and associates.
The governor also said all flags across the state would remain at half-mast throughout the mourning period declared in honour of the deceased.
However, Fintiri directed that essential services should continue to operate despite the work-free day.
Tukur, who served as the third civilian governor of the defunct Gongola State, later held several prominent positions in Nigeria’s public and political spheres. His burial in Yola attracted political associates, traditional rulers, family members and other sympathisers
