The African Democratic Congress has said Nigeria needs experienced political leadership as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The party made the position known while highlighting the political experience of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is expected to contest the 2027 presidential election on the ADC platform.
The ADC has continued to defend Atiku amid calls by some political actors for him to step aside and allow younger opposition figures to lead the coalition ahead of the election. The party’s Chille Igbawua recently dismissed such calls, saying age alone should not determine a politician’s ability to govern.
Igbawua, a former member of the House of Representatives and an adviser to the ADC National Chairman, said the party remained open to dialogue with other opposition groups despite disagreements over the coalition process.
He said discussions among opposition parties were necessary to create room for cooperation ahead of 2027, adding that differences should not prevent political actors from engaging one another.
The development comes as opposition parties intensify consultations over possible cooperation ahead of the election. Six opposition parties recently agreed to establish committees to work on a framework for opposition unity, a national reform programme and a roadmap towards a common presidential candidate.
The ADC has also maintained that it is prepared for the 2027 electoral contest and has called for a credible electoral process. Its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party would focus on protecting its votes during the election.
