Motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have raised concerns over abandoned heavy-duty vehicles obstructing parts of the busy highway, warning that the situation could lead to more crashes.
A faulty truck and a piling rig were reportedly left around Gideon Bus Stop and the Kara-Ibafo section of the expressway, creating additional hazards for motorists, particularly at night.
A PUNCH Metro correspondent who visited the areas on Saturday observed that a hydraulic piling rig had slipped from its lowbed trailer and tilted towards a roadside ditch, with its mast extending towards the road.
Only a safety cone was reportedly placed near the trailer to warn approaching motorists.
At Kara-Ibafo, another truck involved in a crash that killed seven people on August 24 was still abandoned by the roadside.
Motorists said the obstructions could force drivers to make sudden manoeuvres, particularly when approaching the affected areas at night or at high speed.
A motorist, Adewale, said the heavy-duty vehicles were difficult to notice early enough and could cause a serious accident if drivers were distracted or speeding.
Another road user, Kunle Bankole, urged the relevant authorities to remove the vehicles or provide adequate warning signs until they could be moved.
A resident, Tunde, said the vehicles had reportedly remained at the locations for about three weeks, describing the situation as worrying because of the volume of traffic on the expressway.
The concerns come against the backdrop of previous fatal crashes involving stationary and heavy-duty vehicles on the expressway. On August 24, seven people were killed and two others injured in a multiple crash around Kara-Ibafo.
In December 2025, former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped death after the vehicle conveying him collided with a stationary truck on the expressway, although two of his friends died in the crash.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency had yet to respond to enquiries about the abandoned vehicles as of the time of filing the report.
