The Social Democratic Party has commenced preparations for the 2027 general elections, with its leadership declaring that the party is ready to contest elections across all levels of government.
The National Chairman of the SDP, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, made this known at the party’s National Convention in Abuja, where he said the party had remained united despite challenges.
Gombe said the SDP planned to field candidates for the presidency, 109 Senate seats, 360 House of Representatives seats, 28 governorships and 1,015 State House of Assembly seats.
He said party officials were already undergoing training across the six geopolitical zones as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s structures and improve its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the election.
According to him, the SDP’s agenda is built around four major areas: security, productive employment, social justice and accountable governance.
The national chairman urged members to engage Nigerians with sincerity and mobilise more youths and women into the party.
Speaking at the convention, the party’s presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, said poor leadership was responsible for Nigeria’s persistent poverty despite the country’s abundant natural resources.
Adebayo argued that Nigeria had sufficient oil, gas and mineral resources to provide prosperity for its citizens, but that poor governance had prevented the country from realising its potential.
He said the SDP was different from other political parties because its focus was on fixing the country and providing Nigerians with responsible leadership.
Adebayo also directed party leaders to begin door-to-door campaigns and work towards securing National Assembly members who would support an SDP-led government.
He said the party’s message to Nigerians would centre on ending poverty and insecurity while promoting accountable leadership.
The SDP governorship candidate in Nasarawa State and former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, also urged party leaders to take the campaign to the grassroots, saying the party’s success in 2027 would depend largely on its ability to connect with voters in their communities.
