INEC Debunks Viral Claims of Revised 2027 Campaign Timetable

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that it revised the campaign timetable for the 2027 general elections, describing the information as false and misleading.

The commission said the viral graphic did not originate from INEC and urged Nigerians to rely only on information released through its official communication channels.

The false graphic claimed that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections would end on January 15, 2027, instead of January 14 as contained in the commission’s approved timetable. It also alleged that campaigns for governorship and State House of Assembly elections would close on February 5, 2027, rather than February 4.

Reacting to the reports, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the commission had not issued any revised campaign timetable.

He explained that all campaign dates remain as contained in the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections released by the commission on February 26, 2026.

Oyekanmi urged journalists, political parties and members of the public to verify electoral information through INEC’s official platforms before sharing or publishing it.

“As we enter the election season, we must all remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation and disinformation,” he said.

Under the official timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027. Campaign activities are expected to end on January 14 and February 4, 2027, respectively, in line with the Electoral Act.
