Residents affected by the devastating flood that swept through parts of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, have appealed to the state government for immediate assistance after losing homes, belongings and sources of livelihood.

The flooding, triggered by heavy rainfall that lasted throughout Thursday night, submerged several residential communities, leaving thousands displaced and causing extensive damage to property.

One of the victims, identified simply as Idongesit, said he was unable to save any of his belongings as floodwaters overwhelmed his home overnight.

According to him, everything in the house, including clothes, mattresses and other valuables, was destroyed, prompting him to call on the government to provide urgent relief for affected families.

Another resident, Christian Etim, described the situation on Tabernacle Road as heartbreaking, noting that many families are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the disaster. He urged authorities to swiftly provide humanitarian support to ease the suffering of victims.

Similarly, Udo Okon, a resident of Ekemba Street, recounted how he fled with his wife and children after floodwaters engulfed their home.

“We lost everything to the flood,” he said, adding that escaping to safety was their only option as the water rapidly filled the building.

Among the worst-hit areas are Abak Road, Ekemba Street, Uwah Street and Aka Itiam Street, where homes and business premises were inundated following several hours of torrential rainfall. Residents also raised concerns over safety after videos emerged showing buildings almost completely submerged by floodwaters.
