Zamfara By-Election: IGP Deploys AIG, CP To Oversee Supplementary Poll

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has assigned Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Gummel, along with the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, CP Rabiu Muhammad, to Zamfara State to oversee the supplementary election for the Kaura-Namoda South State Constituency.

AIG Gummel, who made this announcement while speaking to police officers and other security personnel, cautioned against any interference in the election process scheduled for August 21.

He also warned political thugs and troublemakers against any attempts to disrupt the election.

The AIG stated that security agencies are prepared to ensure a safe and secure environment in the five polling units designated for the election.

In addition, CP Rabiu Muhammad advised police officers assigned to election duties to remain at their assigned security posts and to refrain from direct involvement in the voting process.

He emphasized that their responsibility is solely to maintain security in the area, without interfering in electoral activities.

Furthermore, police authorities have declared a prohibition on the involvement of state-owned security agencies in the supplementary election.

This supplementary election is set to occur in five polling units across two registration areas, namely Sakajiki and Kyambarawa wards of the Kaura-Namoda South Constituency.

The supplementary election is a result of the earlier declaration of the Kaura-Namoda South Constituency by-election as inconclusive by the Returning Officer, Lawal Sa’adu from the Federal University, Gusau.

Gusau clarified that the difference in votes between the leading party and the runner-up was smaller than the total number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected in polling units where elections were cancelled, thus necessitating a supplementary election.

However, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Gusau prior to the exercise, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mahmuda Isah, assured political parties and voters that the commission had implemented sufficient measures to guarantee a seamless and trouble-free process.
