Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to recommend former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship candidate for Bwari Area Council, Julius Adamu, to President Bola Tinubu for appointment as Chairman of the FCT Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
Wike made the pledge during an interactive meeting in Bwari, where he praised Adamu for withdrawing from the council chairmanship race and supporting the APC candidate, Joshua Ishaku.
According to Wike, Adamu was a strong contender in the election but agreed to step aside after discussions with political leaders in the interest of what he described as the broader political arrangement supporting Tinubu.
The minister said Adamu’s willingness to relinquish his ambition demonstrated humility and commitment to the political process.
Wike recalled that he personally approached Adamu and asked him to withdraw from the contest and support Ishaku.
He said Adamu accepted the request without hesitation and also sought his father’s approval before stepping down.
“Immediately I leave here, I will send this name to Mr President for an appointment,” Wike said, adding that he would recommend Adamu to head the FCT UBEC.
The development comes months after Adamu withdrew from the Bwari chairmanship contest and endorsed the APC candidate following consultations with Wike. The APC’s Joshua Ishaku was subsequently declared winner of the election.
Wike, who has continued to promote cooperation between politicians across party lines in the FCT, also urged residents to support Tinubu and other APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.
He argued that political parties should be viewed as vehicles for achieving development rather than obstacles to cooperation.
“It doesn’t matter the party. After all, a party is a vehicle that conveys you to where you are going. When you get there, you come down from the vehicle and you now work for the interest of the people,” Wike said.
He also urged residents to judge political leaders based on their accessibility, responsiveness and ability to address the needs of their communities.
