Uber’s exit from Nigeria has thrown many ride-hailing drivers into uncertainty, particularly those who acquired vehicles through financing arrangements linked to the platform.

Drivers using vehicles financed by mobility company Moove are now worried about how they will continue generating enough income to meet their loan repayment obligations following Uber’s withdrawal after 12 years of operations in Nigeria.

The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria said affected drivers would have to move to competing platforms such as Bolt and inDrive, although many were already struggling with rising fuel costs, vehicle maintenance and other operational expenses.

The union also raised concerns over the future of vehicles acquired specifically for Uber operations, warning that the company’s departure could worsen the financial burden on drivers with outstanding loans.

While Uber said it was shifting investment towards markets where it could create more value, its exit presents an opportunity for rival ride-hailing platforms to attract drivers and passengers previously using the service.
