Security agencies have intensified search-and-rescue operations following the abduction of an unspecified number of students writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination after suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Borno State Police Command said the Commissioner of Police had deployed the Area Commander and other security personnel to the area, with operatives combing nearby forests in a coordinated effort to rescue the abducted students and apprehend the attackers. Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso said security forces confronted the terrorists during the raid, preventing what could have been a larger-scale abduction.

The attack occurred at about 9 a.m. on Monday when the gunmen stormed the school, firing sporadically before abducting students and some women selling food within the school premises. Reports indicate that at least one teacher was killed, while another sustained gunshot injuries during the incident. The exact number of those abducted is yet to be confirmed.

Authorities have appealed for calm as rescue efforts continue, assuring residents that security operatives remain on the trail of the attackers and are working to secure the safe return of the victims.
