Peter Obi and Kwankwaso Declare for NDC Ahead of 2027

This is a significant political development, but its impact will depend less on the headline and more on what follows next.

On paper, the entry of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso into the NDC gives the party instant national visibility and a broadened voter base across key regions. It signals an attempt, perhaps the most serious yet, to consolidate opposition strength ahead of 2027. Both figures bring distinct political capital: Obi with his urban, youth-driven support, and Kwankwaso with an established northern grassroots network.

However, Nigeria’s political history suggests that alliances of this nature are often easier to announce than to sustain. The immediate question is not just who joins the party but also how competing ambitions will be managed.

If the NDC cannot quickly clarify its internal power structure, particularly around the presidential ticket, it risks replicating the same fragmentation currently weakening other opposition platforms.

There is also the issue of ideology. The party’s emphasis on being “ideologically driven” will be tested early. Nigerian voters are increasingly sensitive to coalitions that appear transactional rather than programmatic.

Without a clear policy direction that differentiates the NDC from existing parties, this move could be dismissed as another rebranding exercise rather than a genuine alternative.

Timing is another critical factor. With electoral deadlines approaching, the party must move beyond symbolic alignments and begin the hard work of building state-level structures, harmonising support bases, and presenting a coherent national message.

A practical recommendation for the NDC would be to prioritise three things immediately: establish a transparent framework for candidate selection, articulate a clear policy agenda that addresses current economic and security concerns, and invest in coalition discipline.

Without these, even a high-profile merger of political heavyweights may struggle to translate into electoral success.

For Obi and Kwankwaso, this move raises expectations. The real test will be whether they can convert personal followings into a unified political machinery, something that has historically proven difficult in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
