The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed that it will not be concerned about the recent coalition that has chosen the African Democratic Party (SDP) as its platform for the upcoming 2027 general election.
Umar Damagum, the party’s Acting National Chairman, made this announcement during the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Thursday in Abuja.
Damagum asserted that the PDP is the sole party prepared to reclaim power in 2027.
He emphasized that the PDP possesses the necessary structure, national acceptance, and legacy to support significant nation-building efforts.
“I must address the issue of a so-called coalition that has recently been formed, which includes some defectors from our party,” he stated.
“Regarding this matter, I am happy to inform you that this political endeavor is not something to be overly concerned about.
“As the saying goes, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Some individuals have recently come to understand this reality in a rather uncomfortable manner.
“Many who joined the coalition have already returned to our ranks. Some even claimed they never departed and merely attended a meeting; we accept their admissions without bias.
“I would like to add that this return is not exclusive to PDP members. Individuals from other political parties who initially joined this coalition have come to realize that the initiative is doomed, and their rapid return serves as evidence of this,” Damagum remarked.
The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, stated that the party empathizes with those who left out of impatience, noting that the door remains open for their return.
“This is not the time for name-calling. This is not the time for insults.
“We empathize with those who grew impatient and departed, but undoubtedly they will comprehend our position, and we will keep the door slightly open for their return whenever they choose, within a specified timeframe.
“We will not tolerate indiscipline within this party any longer, as it is indiscipline that has led us to these difficulties.
“Certainly, the party has demonstrated resilience, and the governors are facing numerous challenges, similar to those encountered by the NWC.
“We will persist in expressing our confidence in the party’s governing bodies,” he stated.
Mohammed praised the members of the party’s NWC, who exhibited generosity by agreeing to step down earlier than the conclusion of their term.
“They have demonstrated that they are at least aligned with us, and we should always recognize that, for if everyone adopts a rigid stance, we will not achieve our desired goals,” Mohammed remarked.
