The Nigeria Democratic Congress has called for a full investigation into the reported obstruction of the convoy of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State.
The party described the incident as a serious threat to democratic participation, alleging that suspected thugs blocked Obi’s convoy while he was attempting to gain access to Yelwata, where he had planned to meet victims of the 2025 attacks in the community.
The NDC alleged that the individuals involved were armed with dangerous weapons and deliberately prevented Obi from reaching the community.
The party said the circumstances surrounding the incident should be thoroughly investigated to determine who organised the obstruction and whether those responsible acted independently or with political backing.
The development has generated political reactions, with the incident occurring as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election. Obi’s convoy was reportedly blocked on the Gboko road during his visit to the state.
The NDC said political disagreements should not be allowed to undermine citizens’ constitutional rights or prevent political candidates from engaging with communities during election campaigns.
The party therefore urged security agencies and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that those found responsible are held accountable.
The call came amid competing accounts of the incident, with the Benue State Government denying that it deliberately blocked Obi and accusing him of breaching established protocols during his visit.
The incident has consequently become a fresh point of political tension ahead of the 2027 elections, with questions being raised over campaign access, political tolerance and the safety of opposition candidates.
