Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has stated that the endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election by fellow All Progressives Congress (APC) governors is not intended to ridicule Nigerians, but rather reflects a “belief” in his principal’s leadership abilities.
“It is a conviction of the governors; it is a belief of the governors. There is no indication of mockery in this,” Governor Sule remarked on Sunday during an interview with the news source.
On Thursday, the APC’s 22 governors, along with all its members in the National Assembly and its National Working Committee (NWC), as well as zonal leaderships, endorsed and adopted President Tinubu as the party’s exclusive candidate.
Although the president has yet to formally declare his intention to seek re-election, this action has attracted criticism from opposition parties and other stakeholders who argue that the president should concentrate on governance issues.
However, Governor Sule believes there should be no basis for complaints regarding the endorsement, as the opposition party had acted similarly while in power.
“With all due respect, this is not the first occurrence of this nature. At one time, the PDP had 31 governors in this country, and this was not long ago, and they did not underestimate the intelligence of Nigerians.”
“In 2014, the PDP governors endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan, and the world did not come to an end; people did not accuse them of mocking the populace.”
“This is all part of the conviction of the governors of the ruling party that the President has performed well and has achieved much,” he stated.
The governor also promptly refuted assertions that the country is evolving into a one-party state.
“When you hear the term one-party system, the APC holds approximately 23 out of the 36 states. We tend to forget this history very quickly.”
“Currently, we are facing challenges, and we are implementing reforms that have already been initiated. In order for Nigeria to reach its optimal potential, it is essential to undergo this process. We emphasize that the process is what is being adhered to at this moment,” he stated.
