The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has conveyed deep sorrow regarding the death of the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, whom he referred to as “a supporter of the country’s unity.”
Buhari passed away on Sunday at a London clinic at the age of 82.
In a statement personally signed by him, the Senate President extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the government and citizens of Katsina State, as well as to Gen. Buhari’s immediate family following the loss of the former president.
Akpabio remarked: “Buhari commanded an unparalleled level of support in Nigeria’s political history due to his principled stance against corruption, his relentless pursuit of authentic democratic ideals, and his steadfast advocacy for the unity and stability of the nation.
“Having collaborated closely with former President Buhari as a minister during his administration, I can affirm that he led a disciplined life, prioritizing the welfare of the populace, particularly the underprivileged, and was a leader worthy of emulation because he genuinely cared for Nigeria and endeavored to promote the interests of the people.
He characterized the late former President as “a distinguished military officer who served Nigeria with dedication and patriotism, and upon his retirement, evolved into a democratic icon.”
“Through diligence, perseverance, extraordinary resilience, and discipline, Gen. Buhari became the first opposition candidate to triumph over a sitting president in Nigeria’s history. His leadership and legacy will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to the development and stability of our nation. His life embodied honesty, truth, and justice; he was truly the real ‘Mai Gaskiya.'”
