The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to learn from American voters following the Democratic Party’s victory over President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in the 2026 United States midterm elections.

The opposition party said the outcome demonstrated that citizens could use their votes to hold political leaders accountable when their policies fail to address the needs of the people.

The ADC made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following the Democrats’ victories in elections to both chambers of the US Congress.

The party said the results showed that political power ultimately belonged to citizens and that no political party should consider its hold on government permanent.

“Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent licence to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability,” the statement said.

The ADC added that Nigerians should understand that elections should be determined by citizens’ welfare rather than political loyalty or sentiments.

“American voters understand something Nigerians must also learn: elections are about the welfare of the citizens, not sentiments, political loyalties or personality cults. No leader is bigger than the people, and no political party is entitled to power forever,” it added.

The party accused the Nigerian government of presiding over years of economic hardship, worsening insecurity and declining opportunities, urging voters to consider their interests ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same,” the ADC said.

The Democrats’ victory in the House of Representatives and Senate marked a major setback for Trump and his Republican Party, which had controlled both chambers before the elections.

The ADC called on Nigerians to use the next general elections to demand better leadership and hold elected officials accountable for their performance.
