The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it is intensifying preparations for the 2027 general elections while assuring Nigerians that it will remain neutral in the electoral process.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, as part of the commission’s stakeholder engagement and preparations for the 2027 polls.
Amupitan said the commission had deliberately commenced its preparations early because of the size and complexity of conducting elections across the country.
According to him, INEC is moving away from last-minute preparations by testing, auditing and strengthening its operational systems well ahead of the elections.
The INEC chairman also stressed the importance of traditional institutions in the electoral process, noting their influence and reach within communities.
He said elections should be viewed as a social contract between citizens and those entrusted with public office, adding that public trust remains important to the success of democracy.
Amupitan further assured the Emir that INEC would maintain neutrality, fairness and transparency throughout the electoral process.
“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria,” he said.
The assurance comes amid increasing political activities and preparations by political parties and support groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC has also been engaging stakeholders across the country as it works to strengthen its systems and build confidence in the electoral process.
