The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has announced plans to establish an independent system for transmitting election results from polling units to his campaign situation room during the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed this in an interview with Arise TV on Thursday, saying the arrangement would allow his team to independently monitor results as they are recorded at polling units.
He said the proposed system would operate alongside the official result transmission process of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to Obi, results from polling units would be transmitted to the designated INEC portal while a separate copy would also be sent to his team’s situation room for monitoring.
He explained that the objective was to ensure that results recorded at polling units could be independently verified and to prevent figures that did not originate from polling units from being announced.
Obi said the initiative should not be regarded as the establishment of a parallel electoral system, adding that other organisations could also develop similar monitoring mechanisms.
The former Anambra State governor said ensuring accurate transmission of polling-unit results would be critical to achieving a transparent 2027 election.
He also expressed the view that Nigeria could conduct a credible election, citing Ghana and other countries as examples of places where transparent electoral processes were achievable.
