The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has proposed a decentralised electricity system that would rely heavily on solar-powered clusters across Nigeria.
Adebayo said the proposed system would reduce the country’s dependence on the national grid, which he argued should serve mainly as a backup whenever individual power clusters experience failures.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, the SDP candidate said his administration would establish solar-panel manufacturing facilities across the country and train Nigerians to install and maintain the equipment if elected in 2027.
He said the solar clusters could collectively generate up to 32,000 megawatts of electricity, while also creating employment opportunities for Nigerians.
According to Adebayo, the plan would involve installing between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian roof within 11 months of assuming office.
He said he had previously experimented with solar technology in his hometown and trained about 2,000 people in the sector.
Adebayo also proposed partnerships with countries including China, Turkey and India to establish solar-panel manufacturing plants in Nigeria.
Beyond electricity generation, he said the proposed clusters would support basic household activities while creating jobs through the installation, operation and maintenance of solar systems.
The SDP candidate also advocated increased government investment in strategic sectors such as manufacturing, aviation and education, arguing that public investment could simultaneously improve essential services and create employment.
On energy security, Adebayo said his administration would prioritise domestic crude oil refining and tackle oil theft, which he identified as another major challenge affecting Nigeria’s energy sector.
His proposed solar programme forms part of his wider economic and energy agenda ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
