The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained four police officers accused of extorting N53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an unauthorised stop-and-search operation in Abuja.
FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi disclosed that the officers allegedly abandoned their assigned duty posts and mounted an illegal checkpoint around the Banex area in Wuse, where they preyed on unsuspecting motorists. According to him, the officers stopped the ICPC chairman without recognising his identity and allegedly compelled him to withdraw N53,000 through a Point of Sale (POS) terminal, including transaction charges, before sharing the money among themselves.
Sanusi said the officers have been taken into custody and are undergoing internal disciplinary procedures. He described their conduct as criminal and a violation of the standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force, warning that they would face appropriate sanctions if found culpable.
The police commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling misconduct within the force, stressing that officers who engage in extortion or other unethical practices would be held accountable.
