The Edo State Police Command has uncovered an alleged self-kidnapping scheme, arresting two suspects accused of staging a fake abduction in a bid to extort N4 million from the family of one of them.
Police said investigations revealed that the principal suspect, Lucky Alabi, allegedly conspired with an accomplice to create the impression that he had been kidnapped before demanding a N4 million ransom from his relatives. The plot, however, was uncovered through intelligence-led investigations, leading to the arrest of both suspects.
According to the command, the suspects confessed during interrogation, admitting that the kidnapping was fabricated to obtain money from family members. Police described the incident as a criminal act that diverted security resources from genuine kidnapping cases.
The command warned that anyone found orchestrating false kidnapping incidents would face the full weight of the law, while urging residents to report suspicious activities and avoid participating in acts capable of misleading security agencies.
