Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi has downplayed concerns over reported tensions within the party, insisting that disagreements among members are normal in any democratic organization and should not be viewed as a crisis.
Obi said differing opinions are inevitable in political parties, especially one that is growing rapidly and attracting people from diverse backgrounds. He stressed that internal debates and disagreements should be seen as signs of democratic engagement rather than evidence of disunity.
The former Anambra State governor maintained that what matters is how party leaders and members manage such disagreements. He expressed confidence that the NDC possesses the capacity to resolve its internal issues through dialogue, consultation and adherence to democratic principles.
Obi also urged party members to remain focused on the broader objective of building a credible political alternative for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that personal ambitions should not be allowed to overshadow the party’s collective mission and vision.
His comments come amid discussions over internal disputes involving some party stakeholders, with the NDC leadership continuing efforts to maintain unity as preparations for future elections gather momentum. Obi insisted that disagreements are common in political organizations worldwide and do not necessarily threaten the stability of a party.
