Former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sam Amadi, has cast doubt on the integrity of several political party primaries conducted ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing many of them as flawed and lacking democratic credibility.
Amadi argued that a significant number of parties failed to adhere to transparent and competitive processes during their primaries, resulting in outcomes that did not genuinely reflect the wishes of party members. He maintained that manipulated delegate systems, imposition of candidates and internal irregularities have continued to weaken internal democracy within political parties.
The political analyst warned that when candidates emerge through questionable procedures, the legitimacy of the electoral process is undermined long before voters head to the polls. He noted that such practices often fuel internal crises, defections and prolonged legal battles within political parties.
Amadi further stressed that strengthening internal party democracy remains crucial to improving Nigeria’s electoral system. He urged political parties to embrace transparent and inclusive nomination processes capable of inspiring public confidence and producing credible candidates.
