A former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has officially announced his intention to run for the position of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Lamido shared this news in a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday, indicating that he would visit the party’s national headquarters on the same day to acquire his nomination form.
“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, at 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our esteemed party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to obtain the nomination form to contest for the office of National Chairman,” he stated.
A prominent member of the PDP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lamido expressed his dedication to revitalizing and fortifying the party in preparation for upcoming elections.
“My dedication to democracy and determination to restore our beloved party to its former glory is unwavering,” he remarked.
The PDP, which held power in Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is anticipated to elect a new National Chairman at its upcoming national convention.
Lamido’s candidacy follows the earlier endorsement of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as the consensus candidate for the chairmanship by northern PDP stakeholders.
During its 102nd National Executive Committee meeting held on August 25 in Abuja, the PDP decided to allocate its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, while reserving the position of National Chairman for the North.
Nevertheless, factions aligned with Lamido and another senior leader, Nyesom Wike, have contested Turaki’s endorsement, claiming that the process lacked adequate consultation.
On October 25, 2025, the PDP issued a statement announcing the formation of a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee to evaluate candidates for national offices in advance of the convention.
Chairman Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who is also the Governor of Adamawa State, stated that the screening process will occur on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The committee will be led by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a former governorship candidate in Ondo State and a distinguished legal expert.
