Members of the Abuja Municipal Area Council have rescinded the impeachment of the Speaker and Councillor for Nyanya Ward, Matthew Yare.
Yare, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was removed from his position as Speaker of the AMAC Legislative Council on Monday by eight council members affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the leadership of Deputy Speaker, Tony Onoja.
Among the allegations against Yare were his neglect of council proceedings and his disregard for the laws governing the council, among other issues.
In his stead, the Councillor for Kabusa Ward, Hon. Jankaro Ibrahim, a supporter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was promptly elected as the new Speaker.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Jankaro Ibrahim, representing Kabusa Ward, stated that the decision was made to preserve and promote peace among council members.
He also mentioned that the Council has issued a one-month ultimatum to the Speaker to rectify his conduct, or else a permanent decision will be enforced against him.
“We are here to inform the public about the impeachment process that took place yesterday. We wish to announce that we have withdrawn the impeachment of Dr. Hon. Mathew Danjuma Yare, based on his failure to comply with the orders of the chamber,” Ibrahim stated.
“The orders provided us with the basis to convene or hold sessions regularly twice a month. We have not succeeded in doing that. The second reason is that we hold the majority in the chamber.
“However, the reason for retracting this impeachment is due to the intervention of our stakeholders from various sectors. To maintain peace and harmony, we have decided to heed their counsel. Therefore, we appeal to our supporters and the general public to assist us in lifting this impeachment.
Once more, we are delivering a warning to Dr. Mathew Danjuma Yare, who is set to be reinstated as the Speaker of the Council, that we have allotted him a month to rectify his conduct. Should he fail to amend his ways within this month, we will proceed with the impeachment in his presence, and the new Speaker will be inaugurated immediately.
