The Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum has urged for the prompt removal of the state of emergency that has been enforced in Rivers State, following the recent reconciliation between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking during a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday, the Forum characterized the political turmoil that has affected the state over the past few months as a “regrettable occurrence that has profoundly injured the spirit of our beloved state and cast an unwarranted shadow over our collective reputation, unity, progress, and prosperity.”
While expressing appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his intervention in the crisis, the elders praised both leaders for what they referred to as a “demonstration of maturity and bravery” in pursuing peace.
“This was precisely what we, the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum, had sincerely sought from the outset,” stated the Acting Chairman of the Forum, Alabo Dr Gabriel Toby. “Regrettably, our initial attempts were disregarded, which compelled us to formally appeal to Mr. President.”
The Forum also emphasized that its engagement was motivated solely by the intention to safeguard the dignity and essence of Rivers State.
“We seek no personal advantage, political favor, or compensation. Our only aspiration is to witness our state flourish, with its leaders united and collaborating for the common benefit of all,” Dr Toby remarked.
Although the specifics of the reconciliation have yet to be disclosed, the elders expressed optimism that the process is grounded in the 1999 Constitution and adheres fully to the rule of law.
With peace now reinstated, the Forum called on authorities to restore all suspended democratic institutions.
“It is our firm belief that the State of Emergency imposed on Rivers State should be lifted and all suspended democratic structures completely reinstated,” the statement underscored.
The elders also urged the citizens of Rivers to welcome this period of peace as a fresh start characterized by unity and a shared purpose.
